What Sizes Do I Need?
We offer urns in a range of shapes and sizes. Please keep in mind that when we mention ‘healthy’ weight, we’re referring to the weight prior to any illness that might have caused weight loss, if applicable.
To determine the right urn size, follow these steps:
1.Find out the approximate healthy body weight of the person or pet.
2.Remember that 1 pound of healthy body weight equals just under 1 cubic inch of ash.
3. Assume for shopping purposes: 1 pound healthy weight = 1 cubic inch ash.
4. Check urn item descriptions for size in Cubic Inches.
5. Use the approximate weight to determine the size needed. For instance, a 100-pound individual will yield around 100 cubic inches of ashes, requiring an urn of approximately 90-100 cubic inches or larger.
Urn Sizing Note:
1. Due to various factors, we can’t promise 100% accuracy in urn sizing. However, following our guidelines or contacting us ensures we’re right about 99.95% of the time.
2. Using the 1-to-1 ratio of weight to cubic inches ensures you’ll select the right-sized urn almost 99.95% of the time.
3. Urn capacity is limited by being too small, but any larger size will accommodate your needs.
4. Cremated remains (ashes) can vary in quantity due to factors such as cremation methods, temperature variations, and the individual’s bone structure. To ensure the urn adequately accommodates the ashes, it’s recommended to choose a slightly larger size than calculated.
5. The Cremation Association of North America (CANA) established that a standard adult urn should typically have a capacity of 200 cubic inches. However, exceptions include Keepsake urns, Keepsake Jewelry, and Small and Medium Size Urns.
6. A columbarium serves as a respectful storage site for cremation urns, typically situated in cemeteries or burial areas. It comprises individual compartments (niches) intended for one or two urns, with varying sizes. To ensure the right fit, it’s important to ascertain the precise dimensions of your niche before purchasing an urn.
The term “columbarium” is derived from “columbary,” which historically housed doves. Doves have symbolized spirituality and peace for generations.
